IMO you save a lot more time with the helicopter on the way in. With that said, I always drove before taking the helicopter and never took the shuttle so that may not be accurate.

The official shuttles get to take a short cut through the military base, avoiding all the traffic on the freeway/around the speedway. They drop you off right near the back entrance.
