7793 posts · Joined 2001. #4 · Jun 18, 2009. The biggest problem that I see with the double hump heads is that the intake port is too small with the new cams and "bigger" carbs. etc. If you build the engine just as chevrolet did, then you should be ok. You want lots of compression and a small cam.

But the key is what you have to spend to make them useable. A lot of them are cracked in the exhaust seat area. If you find a set of original stock heads, you'll need a valve job, exhaust seats, valve guides - maybe screw in studs/guide plates.As Doug pointed out there are 3 different casting numbers that have the double hump outside identification.
